Then Philip opened his mouth and, beginning with this Scripture passage, he proclaimed Jesus to him. Acts 8:35
Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes has Eternal Life. I am the Bread of Life. John 6:47-48
Acts 8:26-40, Psalm 66 & John 6:44-51
In Acts today, we find Philip being instructed by an Angel to approach an Ethiopian eunuch who was returning to his homeland after a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. He is said to be “a court official of the Candace, that is, the queen of the Ethiopians, in charge of her entire treasury.” Before we learn of Philip’s Holy Spirit filled instruction, I would like to explain what a “eunuch” is and how they were considered necessary to accomplish acts of service for various people of authority. A eunuch was a man who was castrated usually at an early age to keep them from having urges to complete a bloodline of their own and therefore was considered very trusting when it came to keeping the women of the rulers happy. They had no family ties and therefore were considered more trusting. Many cultures used this type of process as a way of punishment to turn their subjects into loyal servants. The Ethiopian eunuch Philip approached was reading Isaiah 53:7-8 and asked Philip what this passage meant. After explaining that it was Jesus the Prophet Isaiah was foretelling, the Ethiopian eunuch asked to be baptized by Philip when they came across some water on their travel and disappeared after accomplishing his task of sharing the Christ’s Truth.
The Jews were trying to figure out what Jesus meant by saying “for the Bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives Life to the world” and the Jews related to this as Him saying “I am the Bread that came down from heaven.” Obviously, many people today have just as much trouble relating this to their belief in Jesus because it is hard for anyone to understand how one’s own flesh and blood can be consumed let alone be given by a man who was still in their midst. Many a disciple left Christ’s side that day and note He did call anyone back by saying “oh, I just meant that figuratively.” The teaching of Jesus is very clear: “Amen, amen I say to you, unless you eat the Flesh of the Son of Man and drink His Blood you do not have Life within you. Whoever eats My Flesh and drinks My Blood has Eternal Life and I will raise him up on the last day. For My Flesh is True Food and My Blood is True Drink. Whoever eats My Flesh and drinks My Blood remains in Me and I in him” (John 6:53-56).
Paul in 1 Corinthians states, “For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus, on the night He was handed over, took bread, and, after he had given thanks, broke it and said, “This is My Body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of Me.” In the same way also the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the New Covenant in My Blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until He comes. Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord unworthily will have to answer for the Body and Blood of the Lord. A person should examine himself, and so eat the bread and drink the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body, eats and drinks judgment on himself.” 1 Corinthians 11:23-29 It is not our place as followers of His Truth to question His Commands in consuming His Body and Blood. It our duty to share His Truth with the world to live in communion with Him in all things just as the “Mission for the Love of God Worldwide” is shared by over 1.5 million people worldwide to consecrate everything, our lives, our families, our towns and cities and our world on the hands of God asking Him for His love and protection. So we ask in prayer: Dear LORD, we keep a vigilant prayer for Augie Silva. Please heal him and bring peace to his family and friends. We pray today to always seek to live Your Son’s Gospel in every aspect of our lives and consume His Body and Blood worthily LORD. We pray we will consecrate every moment of our lives to live in Your Glory. We ask this in Jesus Name. Amen.
